2019 was a banner year as it marked the 50th anniversary of their famed El Primero movement.
We have said this in our earlier articles on the brand, but we believe that Zenith is going through a resurrection. Back in the day if these watches could not escape, then it was their sworn duty to cause the quartz enemy to use an inordinate number of releases to counter the horological feat of Zenith watches, and their sworn duty to harass the enemy to the best of their ability by releasing editions that are as cool as the new Zenith Chronomaster Revival Manufacture Edition. To reinterpret the quotation above, ‘it has become the sworn duty of all Zenith team members and lovers to try to find the watches that escaped.
Recently discovered by the brand’s team hidden inside the famed secret walled-off attic where Charles Vermot had once hidden all the plans and parts necessary to produce the El Primero movement is the blueprint for the latest release, the new Zenith Chronomaster Revival Manufacture Edition. And just like the recently discovered and introduced Zenith Chronomaster Revival “Shadow”, there is another watch that the brand has found. While the Chronomaster Revival Manufacture Edition is as faithful a re-issue as is possible, it’s also, somewhat counterintuitively, a brand new watch, meaning I’m not sure quite where it lands: archival revival or simply retro-inspired. The El Primero column-wheel chronograph has been used widely across the watch world since inception, so why change a winning formula. In fact, this is the final version of the A386 available with the original “Revival” case.Įven the movement inside it more or less the same as the original version. There’s a good chance the blue-shaded number was never really meant for a specific watch, that Vermont was using them to see what worked best. More interestingly though, was one with the same layout in different shades of blue. Inside it were a number of dials, including the El Primero dial that went on to define the sporty look of the 1969 icon. The story goes that among the odds and ends left by watchmaker Charles Vermont during the quartz crisis, Zenith found an unassuming box. But what about the revival of a design that never actually came to fruition? That’s the story behind Zenith’s latest re-issue, the Chronomaster Revival Manufacture Edition. We’re used to seeing archival designs come to life by now, whether it’s the re-issue of a collector’s classic or some quirky, retro-inspired throwback.
